About Gestune
A free instrument you play with your hands, right in your browser.
What Gestune is
Gestune turns your webcam into a musical instrument. Your left hand makes simple hand signs to pick chords, and your right hand controls volume, tone and voicing. You can also switch to a webcam theremin, take guided song lessons, and record a short clip of your playing.
It is made for anyone who has seen people play music with their hands on video and wanted to try it. You do not need to read music or own an instrument. If you can count fingers, you can play chords. The how to play guide explains every hand sign.
Why it is free and runs in the browser
We want the first chord to be seconds away. That is why there is nothing to install, no sign-up and no account. You open the page, press Start Playing and allow the camera. If you do not have a camera, or prefer not to use one, the keyboard and on-screen pads work too.
Everything happens in a normal browser tab. It works best in desktop Chrome or Edge, Safari is supported, and phones work as well when you turn them sideways.
Privacy by design
Hand tracking runs on your own device using a hand model from Google’s MediaPipe. Your camera video is never uploaded or stored on a server. Recordings you make are created in your browser and saved only when you choose to download them. Your settings are kept in your browser, not in an account. Read the full privacy policy for details.
How songs are prepared
Each song lesson starts with the chords. We check them against several public sources, then simplify them so every chord can be played with one hand sign. The result is a learning arrangement, not an exact transcription, and it is written as chord numbers so it works the same in any key.
We never include lyrics. Song titles and artist names are used only to identify the songs, and they belong to their owners. More songs are added regularly.
The best way to understand Gestune is to try it.
